Test Your Knowledge: Why We Need Water

Do you know why we need water? If the answer is hydration, you’re only partially correct. Our
relationship with water can be more important and complex than you think. Take this quick 4 question
quiz to find out more.
How Much of Your Body is Water?
Water makes up 60 percent of men and 55 percent of women by volume. Note that women have less
water in their bodies naturally than men because they have a higher fat percentage. That means that
women are slightly more at risk for dehydration.
How Many People Don’t Have Water?
One in nine people on earth don’t have access to fresh, running water near their home. For these
individuals, getting a drink of water can mean either traveling quite far or creating new systems for
better filtration in their area.
How Much Water Should You Have in a Day?
Most people should be drinking about 64 ounces of water a day. You also get water through foods,
especially water heavy foods like fresh fruit. But others may need more if they have a high salt diet or
are extremely active. Drinking when you’re thirsty can help, but often means you are already
dehydrated!
How Much Water is Polluted in the US?
In the United States, some estimate 45 percent of the bodies of water are polluted. This pollution can
eventually get into the water table and has to be filtered out. Additional issues, such as pharmaceutical
medication and hormones, are also a concern. This makes filtered water important.
