The Worst Advice We’ve Ever Heard About Hydration
Everyone gives advice. But not everyone is qualified to do so. A lot of people have general health advice about
everything from the food you eat to the water that you drink — and that includes some very bad advice about
hydration. Here’s some of the worst advice we’ve heard, some of which is considered to be “common knowledge”.
You Need to Drink 8 Glasses of Water a Day
The average person might need to drink about 8 glasses of water a day, but for many people this could be too
much or not enough. In reality, you should be drinking water every time you feel thirsty. Unless you have a specific condition, your body should know when you need to drink. You also need to be drinking more water whenever you’re active. If you’re in a hot area or if you’re exerting yourself, you’ll have to drink an extra glass or two of water. Drinking eight glasses of water a day is simply the average amount that the average person needs, and after all you aren’t average!
You Can Get Water from Anything
Many people say it doesn’t matter where you get your water, as long as you’re drinking fluids. But that’s really not true. Fruit juice has a lot of sugar in it, tea and coffee have a lot of caffeine, and soda is often unhealthy. Though you’re still getting liquids and still deriving water, you’re also introducing other things into your system.
Caffeine is an important consideration because caffeine is a diuretic. In other words, caffeine actually makes
your body get rid of more water, which means you need to be drinking more fluids to compensate. Though
obviously you can get a lot of water from any liquid, drinking pure, clean water is still important.
