Pregnancy & Hydration

When you’re pregnant, you need both extra food and water to make sure that your baby is healthy. But you also need to make sure that your nutrients and electrolytes are balanced too, and that can be a delicate process. Here’s what you need to know about pregnancy and hydration.
The Important of Proper Hydration
Dehydration is just as dangerous — if not more dangerous — for a growing fetus as it is for its mother. Dehydration harms your body by making it harder for your body to work. It’s the same for a fetus; a fetus needs water for its growing organs to flourish. Water is also more important for an expecting mother. When pregnant, your body is very prone to overheating. Dehydration can cause this to worsen, as you won’t be able to sweat and reduce your heat
as easily. You also won’t be able to expel waste products as easily, which can kick your kidneys into overdrive.
Preventing Dehydration
Luckily preventing dehydration is as easy as making sure that you get enough water throughout the day. You should drink whenever you’re thirsty and should pay attention to classic symptoms of dehydration, such as excess thirst and dark urine. If you are out in the heat or exercise, you’re going to need more water. If you eat salt-heavy products, you may also need more water. At the same time, you should make sure that the water you’re drinking is well-balanced and well-filtered; otherwise you could throw off your electrolytes and actually drink too much water. Dehydration could lead to higher blood pressure and other pregnancy complications. So you should always follow you doctor’s water intake recommendations especially during pregnancy. If you are concerned you may be
dehydrated you should increase water intake and discuss with your doctor at your next visit, as this may be a sign of another health problem.
